CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Ragnar Lothbrok
• Character Age: Mid 30's
• Character Canon: Vikings (History Channel)
• Canon Point: S2E10; soon after killing King Horik

• Character History: Wiki Page

• Character Personality: Provide information about their personality, both negative and positive aspects — with three of each. Give examples of how they've behaved this way. You do not need to provide an essay, but please submit enough to give a feel for the character.

— Positive Trait: CURIOUS & AMBITIOUS

Ragnar Lothbrok once said that Odin gave his eye wouldn’t have ended up in the legendary sagas had it not been for his famed curiosity that pushed him to gather a group of men and sail blindly to undiscovered lands, of which no other Viking had been to. He has led successful raids in the British Isles and proved himself as a good leader, even when their true leader, Jarl Haraldson, wouldn't support them.

Above all, Ragnar desires to see his family and people thrive, and intends to carry out what he believes to be his fate in order to leave behind a lasting legacy for his sons. His curiosity has led to many incidents, some even ending catastrophically, and leaving him learning some very valuable life lessons that stick with him and shape and evolve him as a man and a leader.

— Positive Trait: CALM & PATIENT

I would worry less about the gods and more about the fury of a patient man.”

It’s a quote that represents Ragnar in so many ways that one might even make the suggestion that he is these two traits personified. In every facet of his life, he is famous for being strategic and smart; weighing his moves from simple day to day living, to executing the perfect attack plan that outsmarts his opponent, both on and off the battlefield.

He is a master at biding his time, if nothing else, and there are moments when we how being so methodical and calculating can lead to Ragnar spending too much time obsessively overthinking things. Being patient, for him, works better when he has an eye on a certain prize and not when it comes to thinking out punishments towards those who betray him or his trust.

— Positive Trait: PROTECTIVE

Protecting everyone and anything that means something to him, even if it means his death. He has been known to destroy every threat against him or his family or people and takes it as a failure if he doesn’t. As a matter of fact, before arriving in Milton, he will have successfully kept his entire family alive and annihilated the one that set out to erase his own. Loyalty is very important to him.

But, there is also his sense of self-preservation that compels him into taking the risks he does with his aforementioned curiosity and ambition. Ragnar is acutely aware that his fate depends on the legacy he wishes to leave behind for his sons, understanding full well that without him, there isn’t one. Yet, even those he isn't blood related to (Floki, Athelstan, Torstein) who he will die to protect, though that doesn’t mean he’s got a bias towards who he will shield. Ragnar is a king and he sees it as his duty to protect ALL people in his realm who follow and ally themselves with him.

note: because of the canon point I've chosen to bring Ragnar in from, his negative traits are currently unfolding so some of these may be more of what he is capable of because of earlier season story arcs and how they change him. (hope that makes sense!)

— Negative Trait: RUTHLESS

Plenty of times, Ragnar has acted in a manner that is surprising and unpredictable to those closest to him, though it seems to work both positively and negatively and in combination with other of his more positive personality traits. However, there is a side to him that can morph into a cold-blooded, heartless man when he ‘s been threatened or betrayed. We see this best with Jarl Borg when Ragnar executes him by Blood Eagle attacking the city he rules over and threatening his family name. At the same time, he is famed for being ruthless and has even taunted a Christian hostage by drawing a cross on his forehead with the blood left on his axe after a battle, giving him a moment of false hope before sending him back to his King, dead and dragging behind a galloping horse.

— Negative Trait: POWERFUL

Power is always dangerous. It attracts the worst, and corrupts the best.

Ragnar never wanted power. He wanted to farm, explore new lands and continue to learn about things he didn’t know about. But in order for change to happen, he also realized that sometimes sacrifices need to be made. Or, at the very least, challenged. His intentions were always good, but as the quote above goes, power of any kind is bound to go to one's head.

In Ragnar’s case, the type of power he possesses is that he is beloved. He gives his family and people hope of settling in a place that will offer them a better life. Only he comes to realize it’s not that easy, and to succeed means making choices that slowly start to change him. Each step forward unveils a new threat, one bigger and stronger than the last, forcing him to match it. The old saying ‘kill or be killed” couldn’t be more true here.

This is something that is currently ongoing, first with his challenging and killing Jarl Haraldson and assuming the title and then by killing King Horik and taking the title as King of Denmark.

— Negative Trait: ARROGANT

With great power comes great arrogance. Really though, when you hold a certain amount of power, sometimes you’re going to flex it in greedy, selfish ways. When Ragnar wasn’t successfully navigating the North Sea and English Channel to discover new lands, he was earning the respect of being a brave warrior on the battlefield. He also makes a name for himself as being a clever strategist who formulated surprise attacks on enemies that cleared Wessex armies.

He was feared and because he was largely undefeated, of course it went to his head. Ragnar is starting to become bold, and carry a type of attitude that reflects this kind of prideful side that lends to his new and inflated ego. However, arriving in Milton will put a pause on this.
